How to use the “How You Are Feeling Thermometer” to help a person of ANY age stop the mind-chatter, negative feelings, negative emotions, review their options, and create solutions:


As life situations continue to change around us, and people keep adapting to what is our temporary “normal”, we start to realize how little we are in control of anything outside of ourselves, our actions, our behaviors, and how we react or respond to any situation that we are facing.

Unfortunately, most of us have not learned skills regarding self-awareness, behavioral self-control, or stress management. This can cause us to get “stuck” or, sometimes overwhelmed, very easily.

Many of us also have not learned how to, or do not feel comfortable, communicating how we are feeling, which may cause an undesirable reaction to what we are experiencing.

Over the past years I have been teaching individuals and groups about self-awareness and self-expression. I believe it is so important to be aware of what we say about ourselves, our lives, and our situations.

We can turn a lemon into lemonade if we take a moment to STOP and evaluate how we are feeling.

I have used the thermometer tool that I have included for you to print out for people of all ages, including adults during workshops.


  1. Print out the thermometer.
  2. STOP and take a moment to evaluate what / how you are feeling.
    • Emotions can be read like a thermometer.  What we feel emotionally can and will affect how we are feeling physically.
    • Ask yourself how you are feeling right now: Are you feeling happy, upset, worried, mad, furious?
  3. Use the thermometer to work through what you can do to shift what you are feeling.  What are your options at this very moment?  What can you choose to do, how to act, who to contact to work through your situation?
  4. Recognize that, even though things may feel out of your control, it is always our choice on how we respond or react.

The awareness you will identify will allow you to work through what you can do about what you are feeling, how you can shift how you are feeling, and the impact of your behavior on others, something also very important to consider.

  • Our emotions and our “mind chatter” can be helpful to our well-being, or tremendously hurtful to our personal well-being.
  • The impact of our behavior also can make a tremendous difference to the well-being of others.


This tool can help us take a moment when we are feeling powerless or out of control to, instead, empower us to shift what we are feeling and experiencing.  It is something so important to recognize that, while circumstances may be beyond our control, we can still create the best life experience possible – in this moment – and can move forward.
